Deep Ecumenism and the Way of Holy Wisdom
There is One Great River that flowed from the beginning and continues to flow from the Great and Holy Mystery, the Unseen Source. Many wells are fed by that Mystery, many expressions. This Great River is moving us forward as part of the universe expanding, and we are now consciously part of that river.
That river is like the feminine Wisdom in the book of Proverbs. She moves with the river and in the holy wells and asks of every person of every faith in every generation, “What is the way of Wisdom?” She invites us to feast at the full banquet with its beauty and terror, its paradoxes, questions, particulars and expansive wonders. This is the juicy wisdom, the living life force within experience.
Wisdom is there in every generation to greet us, initiate us, make us fully human, fully related and participating in the divine. This invitation asks us to engage the questions of the beauty and the terror in order to bring Wisdom enfleshed into a world in need. She is the way of relationship, of deep communication, heaven with earth, heart with mind, creature with creature, faith with knowledge. She speaks to us in sound and in silence, and in the acts of giving and receiving. She is the way of what is hidden yet right before our eyes.
Wisdom asks us to plumb the depths of ourselves and of creation, the inter-connectedness of experience, the inter-relationship of all life, the order of the cosmos, the great shimmering divine energy sustaining and creating this universe replete with diversity, growth, limitation, joy, suffering, communion, and expansion. Her concerns are blessing, relationship, love, compassion, and justice.
Wisdom is the deep well in our soul. Her language is the divine word of creation, and she reveals the divine relationship to creation. Wisdom embodies fully animated within us to bring the cosmic wonder back into our lives and the lives of our tribes.
She gives guidance and teaches us through the experiences she offers us in our lives as we journey upon the sacred paths. She is standing by the roadsides of our lives even now, setting her banquet table, and asking us in each circumstance, “What is the way of Wisdom?”
Ancestral stories with similar concerns are found cross culturally in scriptures and other texts and are referred to as the Wisdom Tradition. This tradition reveals four core mystic paths in human spiritual development.
